Speculation is a highly important skill for the official Cambridge exams, but it is a useful skill for language use in general. While it has its proper place and time, simply practicing the Cambridge exams can become overly redundant, boring, and demotivating. However, speculation can be exercised in other activities. For example, I showed students close-up images of everyday things and asked them to speculate what they thought they were. I then revealed what they were to the students to see if they guessed correctly. Another method is to show a video, pause at strategic moments, and then ask students to speculate what they thought would happen next. I did this with a compilation video of "fails" to add an entertainment factor. These are just two examples, but there are a plethora of ways that students may practice speculation that keeps them engaged and interested while avoiding the mundane task of practicing Cambridge exams over and over again.
