Song Lyrics Activities

Updated: Jul 23, 2022

Below are a few song worksheets I created where students must complete the lyrics with a variety of activities. In some places they must simply choose the correct words. In other places they must put the lines in the correct order by writing numbers beside them, and finally, in some places, they must fill in the gap with the correct word or phrase. These activities make good listening practice through music. Students usually enjoy these quite a bit, and they have the opportunity to practice English with authentic material—in this case, music. Furthermore, songs normally have a lot of slang and expressions, so through these activities students are able to become familiar with some, bolstering their abilities to communicate in informal contexts.

The first document is technically a combination of two songs, which I performed live with my guitar. The song in the second document was also performed live by me. For the third, however, I simply played the official music video on YouTube. I also took the time to ask students before and after the song about what they thought the phrase "same boat" metaphorically meant. I usually played, or performed, each song two times, and then I reviewed the answers with students by having them take turns reading the lyrics with their answers. The whole activity takes about 30 minutes.
