Irish Proverbs

These activities for St. Patrick's Day work well with older teenagers and adults, notably those with upper intermediate to advanced levels of English. There are two possible activities, both utilizing Irish proverbs. The first is to have students match the first halves of Irish proverbs with the second halves. They could do this by a simple matching exercise on a worksheet, or the teacher may take the time to print out the proverbs, cut them in half, mix them, and ask students to place the halves side by side on their desks to correctly form the proverbs.

The second activity involves assigning students proverbs and asking them to share their interpretations—with example situations to which the proverbs would apply— in front of the class. This could be improvised on the spot, or the teacher may ask students to prepare presentations with more time.
